Judge ignores Mugabe pressure, rules in favour of protesters

A Zimbabwe High Court Judge today ruled that Statutory Instrument 101 decreed by police last week to ban demonstration for two weeks is invalid and unconstitutional.

The court gave the government 7 days to enact the instrument legally. It was ruled invalid on the basis that it had been passed by a government arm which is not empowered to promulgate laws.

The judgement comes at a time after President Robert Mugabe appeared to intimidate judges against passing judgements that are pro demonstrators.

Meanwhile opposition parties have already indicated that they will be continuing with mass protests. Activists on social media hailed the judgement as a victory for democratic forces.

However another observer said this ruling does not mean that democratic forces have won

“The 56 activists are still in court and we recently have 3 opposition party activists convicted for murder of policeman Petros Mutedza in 2011. These frivolous court cases are meant to keep the opposition parties busy and sidetrack them
