Government to collect 5c for every $1 on airtime to fund health provision

Staff reporter

Minister of Finance Patrick Chinamasa today presented the 2017 budget before parliament and proposed a Health Fund levy to improve public health provision.

He proposed a health Fund levy that will be funded by collecting of 5c from every $1 spent on airtime or mobile data.

Chinamasa said that health provision was suffering because of the shrinking tax base caused by closure of companies and loss of jobs.

The money will be channeled to public hospitals to provide services to Zimbabweans.

However some Zimbabweans were skeptical of the plan arguing that money that is being collected for medical aid societies such as government controlled Public Service Medical Aid Scheme has been abused in the past without action being taken against perpetrators.
