The government has ordered the reversal of high data tariffs that had been imposed by Econet in compliance with the floor pricing increases cleared by regulator POTRAZ.
In a statement ICT minister Supa Mandiwanzira who is still on leave said that he had consulted with POTRAZ and found it neccessary and morally correct to suspend the high data tariffs.
The Minister said the ” Internet is now a key driver of economic growth, innovation , entrepreneurship and service delivery.” He said it is at the centre of development and must be seen to be accessible.
Mandiwanzira blamed mobile operators for having proposed the new tariffs in a move that is likely to leave Econet with egg on their face after they released a statement earlier in the day saying they were only complying with the regulations.
The high data tariffs caused an outrage with many mobile phone subscribers threatning to leave the Econet platform.
