Student loans on the cards

By Takunda Mandura

Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education Science and Technology Development Dr Godfrey  Gandawa told parliament that students were going to benefit from loans which have been introduced to replace the grant system.

Responding to a question asked by Honorable Emma Muzondiwa on government plans concerning grants which the government used to give students in universities and colleges  Gandawa said the government was going to give loans at low premiums since the government is facing fiscal constraints

“At the moment Government has fiscal constraints and we can, therefore, not give grants to students. In conjunction with the Reserve Bank, we are looking at ways to come up with loans but we cannot disburse grants at the moment. We are looking forward to disbursing loans.

“The Reserve Bank Zimbabwe (RBZ) already invited financiers that can give such loans at low premiums to come forward so that students can be able to pay for their tuition and accommodation fees.”

The students grants were discontinued in 2006 after Zimbabwe faced an economic meltdown. In 2010 the cadetship program was introduced
